Tips for Working at Home

Given the current times, more and more people are working from home. Working from home may not be ideal or as great as it seems. Here are some tips that may help working from home a little bit easier.

  1. Keep a schedule. You may be tempted to sleep in or work a different schedule than normal. By keeping the schedule you are used to, it helps you continue with your routine. It will also help to make it easier when the time comes for you to go back to work.
  2. Socialize with your co-workers. Working at home by yourself can get lonely day after day. You never realize how much you value interacting with your co-workers on a daily basis. Call or video chat with your co-workers daily. It can help boost everyone’s spirits.
  3. Overcommunicate. You and your co-workers are no longer in the same location. Given that, communication is key. You want to make sure that you and your co-workers know what is going on. Calling each other over the phone or video chatting can be very helpful during these times. Also, sending emails to each other can help keep everyone on track.
  4. Set Limits. Setting limits is very important. You may be using your personal cell phone to communicate with clients or employees. It may be very tempting to answer the text or phone call late at night but, you do not have to. You call them back during your normal working hours. You need time to not think about work and be with your family, so set this limit.
  5. Create your workspace. It is important to create a good environment for you to work in. Ensure that you can do your job in the space that you have. It is also important to make sure that your family members understand that you need to get work done with minimal disruptions.
  6. Think Positive. With all the news lately being about COVID-19, it can be hard to be positive during these uncertain times. We are all in this together and we are all there to support each other. If you notice your co-worker may be struggling, reach out to them and try to lift their spirits.
  7. Create Lists. By creating lists of things that you must get done so that it can help you remain on task. You can even try using a calendar or planner to help plan out what you has to be done for the next couple of days or weeks.
  8. Get dressed for the day. You may be tempted to stay in your pajamas all day. By getting dressed, you may help yourself be more productive. Also, you never know when you may have to be in a video meeting.
  9. Eat healthy meals and snacks. You may be tempted to go to the fridge all the time because it is there. If you are snacking, trying for healthy things like fruits or vegetables.
  10. Take breaks. Make sure that you allow yourself to take breaks throughout the day. Try not to work through your normal lunch break. Getting up and moving around may help you to be more productive.
