Standing Out in a Group Interview

Going into a group interview can be intimidating. You are interviewing for the same job at the same time with many other people. You want to stand out from the other candidates so that they choose to hire you.

Here are some tips to help you stand out during a group interview.

  1. Arrive early. This not only helps you to show that you are punctual, but can give you some time to meet with your interviewer ahead of time. This can help to put a face to the name when they are reviewing their notes after the interview.
  2. Don’t hide. Don’t be afraid to put in your input, even if they are not directly asking you. Take any opportunity that you have to speak and show your thoughts/opinions about the questions being asked. By doing this, it can help the hiring manager remember who you were.
  3. Be kind to your competition. Ensure that you provide compliments to your competition in the group interview. Try to compliment them on a specific point that they made. This will help the hiring manager show how you will work with others.
  4. Go first. Volunteer yourself to go first to answer a question or for a group activity. This can help your employer see your confidence. It also helps you to say original thoughts rather than just repeating what the person before you had said.
  5. Leave a good final impression. Once the group interview is done, go and thank the hiring manager for their time. It may also you you time to talk to them and have them ask you or you ask them any questions that were not answered. Also, it is also a good idea to send out a thank you note or email after the interview.
