How to Find Fulfillment in Your Job

How to find fulfillment in your job has been a topic of conversation in the workforce. We’ve all heard the big buzz phrase, The Great Resignation, describing the record numbers of people leaving their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The pandemic has provided ample time and opportunity for employees to question a lot of their beliefs about work and their career choices. With these deep thoughts and incredible job opportunities (like remote) due to the tight labor market, a person can easily become pessimistic about work. They begin to question their purpose and how they can have fulfillment in their work and in their career.  The grass always seems greener, but is it?  Becoming cynical in your job and leaving it for another role isn’t always the answer.  So how do you find fulfillment in your current job.

With years of experience in interviewing numerous job seekers, speaking to various career coaches, and partnering with multiple mentors, we have learned the following 7 steps to find fulfillment at work and in your career.  Even if you know that the job you are currently in is not the right fit for you long-term, we can assure that these strategies will help when you go after that “dream job”.

7 Steps To Follow To Find Fulfillment In Your Job:

1. Define a personal mission and live it each day

What are your intrinsic values?  What defines you as a person? What’s your special sauce? What’s your north star you working towards? Write them down. This step does require some time to sit down, evaluate your life, determine your impactful traits, what do you bring to the table, and what do you want to accomplish with your life at this moment.

2. Be consistent in setting and re-setting goals

Growth is so important when it come fulfillment. If you do not set goals, then there is no growth.  By setting long-term, short-term, and, most importantly daily goals, you set yourself up with success in working toward that “dream job”. Consistent goal setting in life can benefit all aspects of your life, not just your work life.  We promise you that if you do consistently set and re-set goals, you will find more fulfillment in your job.

3. Determine what you can improve in yourself each day and focus on that specific goal

Getting more competent at your job, helps passion grow. Setting a specific goal each day that focuses on something specific you want to improve upon will impact your presence at work and influence others.  If the job is not providing you with a sustain level of passion, you will start to look for the next best thing.  This makes it exceedingly difficult for you to gain a valuable experience and, therefore, gain a valuable skill set.  By improving your skill set and adopting a craftsmen mindset, you begin to differentiate yourself from your peers and take control of your work relationship which helps shaping the fulfillment in your job.

4. Take initiative – don’t sit on the sidelines

Find ways to be proactive. Volunteer for projects that align with your mission. Your enjoyment in a project at work is in direct correlation to the amount of emotional energy you invest in it.  If you find projects that align with your mission than your level of fulfillment naturally comes into play. You might feel uncomfortable and challenged at first, but you will feel more fulfilled, and you will start to grow in your position.

5. Learn something new and become the expert

This goes back to point #3 of adopting a craftsmen mindset. Learning new things is empowering and gives you sense of pride for the accomplishment, which equates to fulfillment.  What is an area you would like to improve? Are there webinars or online courses you can take? You’re your company pay for growth learning initiatives? Talk to your supervisor about how the company can work with you to improve in that area.

6. Build positive relationships

Having positive people in your life is the key to a happy life.  The more positive and upbeat relationships you build in your current work setting the more fulfillment you will feel.  It’s so important to show interest in people and take time out of your busy schedule to listen to the people that surround you.  Just being a good person with a positive outlook will build positive relationship.

7. Be grateful

This is the icing on the cake – being grateful.  Life can be a lot worse.  A lack of gratitude in life can only lead to internal unhappiness and result in depression and discouragement.  A person who feels an abundance of gratitude, no matter how bad things may seem, will eventually attract better and brighter opportunities.

None of these ideas and strategies will help you unless you do one more thing.

Make a choice and just go ‘do it.’
