16 Mar 6 Second Resume Scan
Having your resume stand out from other candidates, can be one of the most difficult things of the hiring process. You want to make sure that your resume is actually being read and not just glanced over. You may have heard that you have six seconds from the time someone reads your resume to make a great first impression and make someone want to learn more about you. If they aren’t interested, they most often will move onto the next candidate. Beating the 6 second resume scan can help you make sure that potential employers are actually looking at your resume. We put together some tips for you on how to beat the six second resume scan.
- Easy to Read. Make sure that your resume is clean and easy to read. Make sure that your name, previous job titles, previous employers, start and end dates of employment, and education are clearly visible. Also, make sure that your contact details are easy to find.
- Front Page Attention. Get key information on the first page of your resume so that people will want to read more. This information should be able to be found quickly and easy by the person reviewing your resume.
- Location. Make sure that you match the location of the job that you are applying to. If you are applying to a job in California and you live in New York, chances are that you will be skipped over. If you are relocating to that area, make sure that you clearly state that on the resume.
- Related Job/Industry/Function. Recruiters that are looking to fill a particular job, are going to look for someone who has prior experience working in a similar job and industry. They want someone that has some experience and they will not have to spend a lot of time training someone to do the required tasks.
- Summary. This is a 2-4 sentence summary of your skills and qualifications that should show how you will fit the needs of the hiring company.
- Highlight the Skills. Use a bulleted summary list to show how you fit the skills to fit that specific job.
- Content of Resume. Make sure that your profile or summary is backed up by the information that you put in your resume. You should make sure that you highlight your strong career history.
