10 Tips for Your First Day on the Job

Starting a new job can be frightening. You want to make sure you fit well with the team and also catch onto the job as soon as possible. Making a good first impression on your first day can set you up for success in the role.

Here are 10 tips for your first day on the job.

  1. Sleep. Make sure that you are getting a good night sleep. You should not only do this the day before your first day but a couple days before you start as well.
  2. Research. Make sure that prior to going in on your first day you do as much reasearch as possible. You can look up information about the company or brush up on some skills that you haven’t done in a while that you know will be a normal task with the job. The more you know, the better.
  3. Map it. Make sure you know where you are going for your first day. Get an idea of where you have to go so that you get to work on time your first day. The worst thing you can do is be late on your first day because you took the wrong turn.
  4. Dress. Make sure you dress appropriately for the job you are performing. It is okay to contact who hired you to ask what the dress code is if you are unsure.
  5. Be on time. Make sure that you arrive on time, and maybe even a little early on your first day.
  6. Meet people. Normally we would say to shake peoples hands, but that now is most likely not okay anymore due to COVID. Find a way to introduce yourself to people and remember their names.
  7. Questions. Ask as many questions as you can think of. It is better to know or understand something now, then make a mistake later on.
  8. Take it all in. Your new co-workers have been there longer than you. Welcome their advice and get to know them. They are there to help you when need it.
  9. Socialize wisely. You have plenty of time to get to know your co-workers in the future. Don’t share too much on your first day or first week. Give it time for a great relationship to develop with you and your fellow co-workers.
  10. Give it time. You will be given a ton of information on your first day and week. Nobody expects you to know it all. Give yourself some time to fully understand the materials and information that you are provided.

We hope these tips help you on your first day at your new job. Good luck on your new career adventure!
