Soft skills are very important for everyone to have, especially in the work place. Soft skills are attributes that someone has that enable them to interact in a positive manner with other people. While at work you may be constantly dealing with your co-workers, clients, and others. By working on soft skills, you are making it easier for yourself and others to interact with you.

Here are ten soft skills that everyone should work on.

  1. Communication Skills. Communication skills include verbal, non-verbal, and written communication. Be confident when you are communicating verbally. For non-verbal communication, you need to be aware of your body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions.
  2. People Skills. Work on your listening skills. Rather than listening to respond, listen so that you are understanding what someone is saying. People like people who can actively listen and empathize where the person is coming from. They try to understand what the other person;s point of view is.
  3. Self-Management Skills. The biggest thing is to not wait for someone to ask you to do something. You should always be looking for something to do. You should be comfortable with your job and know/understand what needs to get done.
  4. Managing Your Boss/Employees. This basically means that you are managing the expectations of your team. You should understand that they may not have the same priorities as you have. Keep an open line of communication with your team. Check in with each other often.
  5. Leadership. You should learn and have the ability to inspire and motivate others to get the job done.
  6. Productivity and Time Management. By properly managing your time, you are ensuring that you are putting out a better quality of work. Some great examples that may help people with time managent are to-do lists, time blocking, save shortcuts, and creat templates for frequently used items.
  7. Problem Solving. Try to think outside the box. Don’t just do what you are comfotable with. You should be able to make a judgement and think through the best possibe solution. Learn from you past experiences.
  8. Marketing Skills. You want to showcase your talents and achievements. You can network through conferences, meeting with clients, and via social media platforms, such as LinkedIn.
  9. Job Search and Interview Skills. Research various resumes to give you an idea of how you would like to format yours. Research common interview questions.
  10. Career Management. It is up to you to determine what path you want your career will go. Along the way mistakes will happen. Mistakes help you grow and will lead you down the proper path you should be going down.
